Information on London's National Gallery
The serviced London lodgings are home of numerous tourists coming from various corners of the planet for one reason - to attend the National Gallery, the most important cultural resource in the country.
In 1824, the House of Commons agreed to give ?57,000 for the superb picture collection of the outstanding John Julius Angerstein, a banker. The 38 pictures were planned to shape the major core of a new national collection, for the education and enjoyment of all people. Till a gallery construction was built, the pictures were exhibited at Angerstein's house located in Pall Mall.
The National Gallery at Pall Mall was frequently overcrowded and hot and its diminutive size in comparison with the Louvre in Paris was the cause of national embarrassment. But Agar Ellis, now a trustee of the Gallery, appraised the site for being "in the very gangway of London"; this was seen as necessary for the Gallery to fulfil its social purpose. Subsidence in No. 100 caused the Gallery to move briefly to No. 105 Pall Mall, which the novelist Anthony Trollope described as a "dingy, dull, narrow house, ill-adapted for the exhibition of the treasures it held". This in turn had to be demolished for the opening of a road to Carlton House Terrace.
In the year 1914, the Gallery given its first official lecturer guided more than 11,000 guests in the first year. The National Gallery assigned a Scientific Adviser in 30s of the previous century who conducted pioneering work in established a Physics Laboratory and X-Ray photography of pictures at the Gallery. The worth of the Scientific Department was fast ratified by a government query in 1947; whose information stressed scientific research was necessary to support the Conservation Department's work. This resulted in the Chemical Laboratory's establishment, whose work comprised investigating paints, conservation, and varnishes materials.
Today, it is a must-see spot in London, which is attended by many visitors from various parts of the world.

Did Charles Dickens and Anthony Trollope know each other personally?
There are records of the two authors meeting at many literary activities and even speaking on the same platform. The acquaintanceship would not have run very deeply because their characters differed greatly. Dickens was at home with newspaper people and actors(and actresses.) Trollope was more conventional, working in an administrative job with the national postal service and maintaining a typically Victorian home life. He revelled in his membership in popular clubs and in his involvement with the Liberal party. Although he was lionized by Victorian society, Dickens was still somewhat of an outsider, not quite a "gentleman" in some circles.
