What is the book Anna Karinina about? Is it good? Please don't ruin the ending.?
What age group? Middle School? High School? Adult?
What contents does the novel hold. Depressing?Romantic?Any parts that I should be warned about?
I was hoping you'd have an answer by now, I've been checking this question periodically to see if it got any responses, but so far no one has written anything. I'm kind of wondering about this book myself. I read a book earlier this year called The Unbearable Lightness of Being and the characters Tomas and Tereza have a dog named Karenin, named after Anna's husband in Anna Karenina.
I went to another site for reviews and most people seem to have enjoyed it. Here's a description: "Anna Karenina tells of the doomed love affair between the sensuous and rebellious Anna and the dashing officer, Count Vronsky. Tragedy unfolds as Anna rejects her passionless marriage and must endure the hypocrisies of society. Set against a vast and richly textured canvas of nineteenth-century Russia, the novel's seven major characters create a dynamic imbalance, playing out the contrasts of city and country life and all the variations on love and family happiness."

"Great stuff! Proof that while our environment changes, human beings remain the same. Tolstoy's 19th century Russians have all the same frailties, misunderstandings, hopes and dreams, ambitions, loves and jealousies I see among me and my 21st century Canadian friends. Funny how familiar it all seems. And I know I'm a guy but I still cried during all the emotional parts - but people on the Toronto subways don't notice or care about such things thankfully! Great read!"
"There are three aspects of this book that made me love it, and which make me think any of my friends ought to read it.
1. For all history buffs or people interested in historical culture, there are so many well written and matter of fact details into life in Russia in the late 1800s.
2. For psychologists and people watchers. He goes into incredible detail about the expressions, actions, motivations, and true desires of all the characters, and how they work together or problems they experience... basically an incredible work of interpersonal genious.
3. For those interested in politics or economics. There is a lot of discussion of especially agrarian land reforms but also political and social ideas. It is presented not necesarily in a manner of saying what is right or wrong but just in throughing out discussion and material for thought.
Another great side note about this book is that (don't worry I won't give anything away) I already when BEGINNING the book I knew the ending. As I was getting into I hated knowing the ending, and still do hate that I couldn't expereince in order. However, when the ending did come, I was still as in shock, traumatized, and moved by the description and details as I think I would have been if I hadn't known what was coming. SUCH a dramatic scene.
And plus, despite knowing the story of Anna from the get go, I found Levin to be much more intreguing and engaging of a character. I feel very drawn towards and affectionate of Levin, and loved the book just for the bits with him in it.

but there were also other reviews that didn't praise it so highly. One said it was boring, one said it would have been better divided into two books, and a third said that to really relate to it it's best if you're at least in your 30's.
On the whole the reviews are positive (all of the negative criticism I've come across I've listed above), and to answer your question about the age group, from reading the reviews it sounds to me as though the book is probably intended for adults.
