Introduction Of A Concept: Birthing One’S Self
Dance Of The Dissident Daughter by Sue Monk Kidd first introduced me to the concept of one being pregnant with themselves; the concept of actually giving birth to a transformation of the self. This thought has been the focal point of many meditations and deep thought as I have been going through some changes and inner movement myself. I understand this concept well now and too feel that I am on the verge to birthing my newest transformation. I recall other instances in which I have given birth to transformations of myself and will recount these experiences as a way to help others on a path of revolution and to help myself along in my own spiritual journeys of enlightenment.
A transformation of self can be so gradual you don’t even notice the change right away. You may think back to a point in time and realize how far removed from that point and time you are. A transformation may be so dramatic that you really do become a different person of sorts. These transformations may be through major life changes such as getting married, having children or even a death of a loved one. The fact is we are constantly changing and growing else we are stagnant.
My own transformations have taken me from a child of innocence and freedom to a child living through the hardships of death, alcoholism and abuse. A struggle to find my path through patriarchal fear based religion to the warm welcome of the goddess. A journey of selves and lifetimes as I tried on many skins before finding myself including: the proverbial wife, free love hippie(ish), yuppie life, super women/wife/mother and independent woman of natural ways and continuous growth. Some say that I had put on masks, denied my true self; I disagree. I believe these were all a part of me and things necessary to experience to bring me through the fire to my true self. To a point where I was safe to become that which I am, a safe place to form my cocoon. Although it seems as if I have had many lifetimes and should now be able to sit back and enjoy the me I am still in a constant mode of growth and transformation and will continue until the day I pass from this Earth.
Transformation is often difficult, painful and something in which we fight against. We become comfortable in the place we reside and change is scary! What will this change entail and will I lose things that are very dear to me? Good chance you will! And then you will realize that they no longer fit in the existence you are brought to and that the existence is grander than you could have imagined. There is also a good chance that the change is not so grand but very necessary to prepare you for the next transformation. This was the case in my 3rd marriage. Life is change and when we open ourselves to the change instead of fighting it our transformations will be easier. When we begin to hear that soft jingling that change is a head we need to pause and listen and begin to prepare ourselves. If we ignore the jingle that increasingly gets louder we will either be forced into it unprepared or it will vanish and we will have missed our opportunity…for now. Generally it will be back in one form or another or one lifetime or another.
Stay tuned as I record my various transformations and what was gained from each of them. The purpose they have served in this lifetime and how past lifetimes may have had something to do with the life I was in. Names and places will be changed to protect the innocent as I will reveal all, the abuse, the exploitation and the pain in an effort to understand and share.
