"Young Goodman Brown"
In literature, conflict can be defined as a drama between two opposing forces. If a piece of literature has sufficient conflict, then he or she would be able to move the plot foreword and thus, attract and retain the attention of the reader (Waugh 147). Conflict is always very critical in improving the quality of a piece of literature and thus, its absence makes the work lack tension and consequently fall flat. There are three common types of conflict in literature. They include man versus self, man versus society and man versus environment conflicts. The essay will explore man versus society conflict in literature as illustrated by the thoughts of Young Goodman Brown in Young Goodman Brown story written by Nathaniel Hawthorne (Ann 342).
Basically, man versus society conflict in literature occurs when a character in a piece of literature is repressed by the society and not by any other character in the play. It can be generally agreed that people often have problems with the society in which they live (Colacurcio 231). For example, highly respected individuals in society often go against the societal norms which they advocate (Ann 342). This may cause a conflict between an individual who strictly holds the norms and the societal leaders who advocate the norms but rarely act according to them. This is the situation in which the main character in the story finds him in. initially; young Goodman had not noticed the problems in his society until the time he went for a trip in the forest. When brown was leaving for the forest, her wife said, "then God bless you and may you find everything good as you come back" (Hawthorne 8). The quote showed how faith pretended to be very religious. Nathaniel implies two major questions in the story which, in overall depict man versus society conflict in the story. The first question revolves on the reason why the main character can not adapt to the society and the conditions in the society that the main character in the story does not agree (Ann 342).
According to the story, being involved with ones community was very important at the time. Societal norms were very valued and each member of the community had an obligation to act according to the communal regulations. In fact, the punishment set by societal elders was that, if an individual acts against the values of the society, he or she was to be shunned away from it. In addition, Young Goodman Browns society was very small and thus each person new each other (Hawthorne 205). Thus, Brown is depicted in the story as a character aware of the societal norms and at least all people in the society. Young Goodman conflict with the community starts when he encounters a stage man in the woods who declares that he was very familiar with the browns family (Ann 342).
"I have been well acquainted with your family as with ever a one among the puritans; and that is no trifle to say" the stranger said to Brown. According to the statement, the browns family was very prominent in the community and was widely known (Ann 342).
