Robert Harris' review of Chris Dee
Recently when Chris Dee asked me to write a synopsis on one her stories, I don't think she realized she was asking a literary critic to do her bidding.
After reading "Trophies" (and other stories) from author Chris Dee, something has become very apparent about this writer.she can't write. Trying to follow her storyline is like some strange exercise in twisted sophistry. To begin with, reading should be a pleasure and not work, but Dee's stories come off laborious and tiresome to the reader.
Not wanting to crush the dreams of a budding young writer, I investigated further into her other stories only to discover that they are all the same. Chris Dee has been writing on the same theme for the last ten years! All of her stories follow a bastardized Cat woman character in cartoon form, and writes as if DC comics got it all wrong and now she's on a vengeance to set it all right.
However, Dee falls short of her goal as what she writes is lacking in any entertainment value whatsoever. Her characters are all one-dimensional, devoid of any interesting qualities. And when these characters speak, it's all in riddles, as if Dee is writing about some inside joke that only she gets. And never is anything spoken that doesn't subtract from human interest, deficient in effervescence, like a hot coke that's gone flat.
But certainly where Chris Dee in incomplete in the quality of her words she tries to make up for in quantity, piling on one obscure sentence after another, like a word merchant trying to bury her crimes of mediocrity under an avalanche of vocabulary.
Personally, I have read cereal boxes that were infinitely more interesting, and instead of Chris Dee making it her lifelong goal to rewrite the comic classics, she would do better single handedly putting Sominex out of business.
Chris Dee lists herself as an award-winning writer, but I have not been able to verify that. It would seem to me that if one wins an award, they would be thrilled to show it off. But not Chris Dee. She also lists herself as an entertainment consultant. I have found her posts on Linkin, Facebook, and at least two dozen other sites. Yet nowhere does it list the name of her company, or even where she can be found or contacted. Lastly she lists review credits from Penthouse and a few other places. Here again, nothing can be found and no way to verify any of this.
Then is dawned on me. Chris Dee is trying to hoodwink her way into a celebrity status. But a young writer should realize that trying to pull the wool over people's eyes in order to get some recognition is not the way you go about it. It shows an immaturity towards the industry. My personal advice to Ms. Dee would be to spend a lot less time posting phony credits all over the Internet, and more time actually working on her writing skills.
