Madame Bovary As The Protagonist Character
The novels protagonist Madame Bovary also referred in the novel as Emma was a young girl who married a rich man who’s his first wife had died. In the beginning of the novel we learn that Charles Bovary was a humble boy who became a doctor and later on started his practice in Tostes, a rural town. Madame Bovary starts to have romantic yearnings after finding out that her husband could not satisfy her sexually and therefore started having love affairs secretly. She was educated in a convent at a young age and in her marriage, she harbors idealistic romantic illusions, sensuality and passion into fits of extreme boredom and depression. This is when her life fails to match the sentimental novels she treasures; she later had extramarital affairs to satisfy her passion and pleasures.
Madame Bovary was brought up in a rural village and her parents took her to a convent at the age of thirteen. At first she enjoyed the society of nuns but later found that she was responding to the physical beauty of the place instead of growing herself religiously and spiritually. She was fascinated by the perfumes of the attar and the coolness of the holy water fonts together with the radiance of the tapers. At some point, the metaphors of betrothed, spouse, heavenly lover, marriage everlasting that recur during the sermon awoke her in depths of her soul. Emma’s mother died and nuns are surprised of her reactions because after mourning period, she was at her peace and she lacked devotion to religion matters. It was clearly that she was rebellious about the mysteries of the faith as she grew more irritated by strict discipline a thing repugnant to her nature.
When young, she used to read novels with gothic or sentimental romance with eagerness and this influenced her marriage life as she was living in a world of her own. His father took him from the convent and we see the sisters being relieved a reaction which portrays that she was a bother to the whole community at the convent. He start helping his father on their farm but she does not like it as soon she get married to a person who she had not well known for a long period. It all started when his father Mr.Roualt sent for Doctor Charles to treat his broken leg and at this point it is Emma who welcomes Charles and leads him to his father’s room.
Emma was well educated and Charles got fascinated with her and he started calling Mr.Roualt frequently in order to see her daughter. After Charles wife, Heloise dies he marries Emma. She is not happy about the wedding as in her imaginations she was expecting a midnight wedding with torches. This portrays her as very classy and it is ironical that she married a dull man who was an ambitious. She was imaginative romantic in nature and this could be the reason as to why her father found her not helpful in the farm and went ahead to give her out for marriage. This explains why later in her marriage took advantage of Charles devotion to her. (Laurence M Porter,45)
Madame Bovary is not very happy with their wedding because depending on her imaginative thoughts, they make their way from mayor’s office to the church on foot. The wedding feast is laid in a cart shed and the guests who had attended the wedding were a mixed lot, ranging from the prosperous to the not so well to do. This does not impress her as if she could be asked; her wedding could have been attended by middle class people in the society and the prosperous men in the society.
Her classy character is also seen when she was imagining the state of the bedroom. After the wedding night Madame Bovary did not find sexual relations with her husband satisfying as her husband had with her. It is ironical that Charles was very happy with his marriage and he thought he had anew life while her wife found their marriage boring; this is clearly portrayed when Emma was lamenting on her marriage and at some point she ask God why he let her get married. It is obvious that she did not like Charles and that is why he wanted to run away with Rodolpe. She also compares her husband at La Vaubyessard with other noble men who were in the ball and she found her husband to be clumsy, boring and incapable of mixing with high society. She gets an opportunity to rub shoulders with nobility through her lowly husband. Also when they go for an outing together with Homais and his children’s, she surveyed other men and found Charles stupid in his appearance and behaviors but found Leon very attractive. This shows how she hated her husband.
Emma thought she belonged to a class of high society despite her being rooted from middle class country origins. She was determined to do anything to move upward socially and that is why she was repulsed when she saw her husband struggling to smoke and as a result she hid the cigar case. Emma was always trying to escape the dull and oppressive reality of her life and hat is why at last she committed suicide. She imagined being in Paris and other fashionable places of the world and that is why she was obsessed by reading magazines for her to stay abreast of the latest fashion. It is true that she was living in her dream world. Charles had no ambition at all and Madame Bovary wished to be famous and see her husband refined. She saw her husband irritating especially when he dozes off when he was trying to read.(Gustave Flaubert,301-407)
Emma domineering character is seen when she rearranges the house without Charles consent. Charles does not complain and this shows how naïve he was, he did not do anything to his wife even after he learn that his mother and Madame Bovary were not in good terms. When Emma compares him with Leon and Homais, she decides that her husband is so unremarkable and that is why she found him disgusting. She lived extravagant lifestyle and she makes her husband to strain so much because his business was not doing well in Yonville. She becomes weak as a result of being nervous as she did not clearly understand how she could enjoy life outside the marriage as she was supposed to play a role of dutiful wife.
She tries so much to make her marriage work but Charles does not understand her feelings and he thinks that by providing his wife with material things will make her happy. On the contrary Emma is not happy at all with this marriage as Charles was painfully unambitious and that is why his wife got frustrated by his behaviors. As their outward familiarities grow, Emma started to withdraw from her husband inwardly and she observes that their conversation is as flat as a street pavement; she felt as if she was deprived of living out her romantic fantasies. She tries to ignite a romantic passion for Charles but fails miserably and it is very clear that she became very happy when they were invited at LaVaubsyessard . She admires the place and she was taken away by its grandeur and the people who were gathered there.
After returning back to Tostes Emma Bovary was depressed and she spent most of her time imagining wild things. She felt stifled and could not concentrate on anything and wished to go back to the convent or live in Paris or die. During this time her husband was doing well in business and he was very happy when he got his attractive neat woman in the house. Madame Bovary was moody and even her husband could not predict her behaviors. She neglected her drawings, her needlework and her piano. It was very hard for her husband to please her as sometimes she would express peculiar opinions, censuring what was generally approved. She could neither control her own emotions and at some point she was all fire and brimstone and at the next moment she was sweetness and light.
Charles medications did not help his wife and he therefore thought that by moving out from Tostes will help her depressed wife who never liked the village. As she was parking her things she burnt her bridal bouquet which was a clear indication of how she was going to have adulterous affair with other men. By the time they were leaving to Yonville she noticed that she was pregnant. When the Bovary’s arrive, Madame was in a foul mood as she lost her greyhound during the journey.
The Bovary’s were met by Madame Lefrancois and Leon Dupuis who lodges with Homais. When Madame Bovary was stretching out her body before the kitchen fire place, Leon notices her and right there when they were conversing discovered that they had something in common in terms of readings and romantics. By then she was longing for an exciting companion and she found it in Leon and therefore she broke away from the norms of the society. She got attracted to Leon for his youth and romantic ways; since Yonville was no more interesting than Tostes, she eagerly welcomed the opportunity to disperse her dreariness.
When she delivered the bay she fainted in disappointment; this is because she was expecting a baby boy. Her desire to get a male child was as result of her own deprivation as a woman, she thought that a man is always free and he can explore anything he likes, unlike the woman who is inferior. A wet nurse was hired to care for the baby Berth, this shows how impulse she was and how unprepared she was to become a mother. During this time Madame Bovary and Leon started to spend their time together and she even asks him to accompany her to see her daughter. Although Leon was aware of the consequences of having an affair with a married woman, Madame Bovary seemed not to care, all she wanted was a happy life that fulfilled her fantasies.
She went ahead and gave Leon a rug a gesture that caused gossip throughout the town. In nineteenth century a married woman was not allowed to have a casual friendship with any man and people believed that a married woman can only seek fulfillment within the bounds of her marriage. She lived a very extravagant life because even Monsieur Lheureux used to supply her with accessories and fancy goods. He even told her that if she needed any money, he could be in a position to lend her.
She pretended to be a dutiful wife when Leon visited him by praising her husband repeatedly and plays the part of mother to the hilt; inside she knew how she felt for Leon it is only that she was scared and did not have courage to express her feelings to him. If had a chance, Madame would have wished to end the frustrations of her marriage by running away with Leon. It is only her status of being a wife and a mother that prevented her to tell Leon how she felt for him. After Leon left, her passion dimmed and the black days she had known in Tostes begun again.(Clive James,2)
She was very romantic and sentimental and it is during this time when Madame Bovary was very depressed and Rodolphe Boulanger appeared in her life. Radolphes notices Madame Bovary sensuousness and admire her. She starts making regular visits to Rodolphes despite of his warnings; she was like a tick on a cow. When she bumps into captain Binet while returning from La Huchelte, she lies to him foolishly that she had been to the nurse to see her baby. She did so because she knew that Binet was going to spread the gossip throughout Yonville. She did not even realize how foolish she was because everyone in the town knew that the baby was back with her parents in the house.
With very high romantic expectations, Madame Bovary wanted Rodlphe to be serious with her and she decides that they should run away together, to her surprise Rodolphe dismisses her notion as madness and changed the subject. She receives a letter from her father and she feels guilt and full of remorse, she re-evaluated her past and present life. She starts wondering whether her relationship with Rodolphe was any different from any other marital relationship and this makes her to think to love Charles than to pursue an affair.
Madame Bovary used to beautify herself and her room whenever she was expecting Rodolphe to visit her; she also made sure that all linens were clean. She never considered her husbands financial constraints and she continued to oppress him by making him buy her shoes every now and then. She even forced him to buy a wooden leg for Hippolyte. To win Rodolphes love, she gave him expensive things including the riding whip, she cries out for his love but Rodolphes was still resistant to declare his love for her. She imagined her and Rodolphe leaving Yonville and one day, she sends Lheureux to bring him a cloak, a case and a travelling bag. The plan was that they run away but Rodolphes made it clear to her that running away with her would have been too stupid.(Cecilia Marshik,56)
The plan she had with Rodolphes reveals her spiritual and moral decay and how she had totally became defiant towards a society that expected her to be by her husbands side who was weak willed and unambitious. It is very clear that she did not have any love for Rudolphs but she just wanted to be away from his husband, the more she gave herself to the one the more she loathed the other. She foolishly s[pent the money with Rodolphes and even ordered expensive gifts for him though she had no way to pay for them.
Lheureux took advantage of her by giving him items and he knew exactly that she was not doing well financially and that she had a load of debt to pay. Her love with Rodolphe had faded from brightness to darkness and at last Rodolphes writes her a not indicating that they had no future together. When she read the letter Madame Bovary became hysterical and she felt like throwing herself out of the window.(Mario Vagas,24)
Madame Bovary lastly found life unbearable because of the problems she had, on the other hand she was experiencing hard time because all the men she had an affair with were no more interested with her. She could not tell Charles what was happening in her world as she was full of remorse and she found it better to die instead of living a life full oh humiliations. She went to the chemist shop and persuades Justin to let her in to the storeroom and in there took a jar of arsenic and went home with it. Charles found her wife seriously ill but it was too late for him to safe her and that was the end of her.
