Does it matter what star wars book I read first?
Theres alot of star wars books at my library. I dont know wich one to pick. Theres like a episode 11 book.
I would suggest starting with the books taking place after Ep VI: Return of the Jedi. Look in the front of just about any Star Wars book and you will see a timeline for the stories. The first published books took place after Ep VI and continued the stories from there until Lucas starting with the Prequel era movies, then the stories expanded to include this timeline as well. I recommend the following books/series in this order:
The Truce at Bakura
The Courtship of Princess Leia
The Thrawn Trilogy
I, Jedi
The Jedi Academy Trilogy
Blackfleet Crisis Trilogy
Corellian Trilogy
Hand of Thrawn Duology
The New Jedi Order
The Dark Nest Trilogy
Tatooine Ghost*
Legacy of the Force
*This book takes place much earlier in the timeline but will make more sense if read after the Dark Nest series. Also contains some references to events in Ep. II & III.
These books follow the main characters after ROTJ for about 45 years and introduce some new and interesting characters, including a couple great bad guys.
I also recommend the X-Wing series, which takes place shortly after the events of Ep VI, but mainly features new characters with appearances by some of the main characters. Good series with plenty of action.
I haven't gotten too much into the books taking place before Ep. IV, but do recommend reading the Darth Bane books and the Republic Commando Books. You may also want to include reading Rogue Planet after reading the New Jedi Order books. This features Obi Wan and young Anakin shortly after the events of Ep. I.
If you are a fan of the original movies, then you might also consider the Han Solo Trilogy, the Bounty Hunter Wars or the Lando Calrissian Trilogy. These expand the stories of Han, Boba Fett and Lando and are fun reads.
